My Inspiration is You - by Deborah Rios

My TS journey began nearly 16 years ago. I started as a part-time employee at the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States (TSSUS). Cindy and I shared classroom activities and parties with our children and our girls became close friends in no time. Cindy’s daughter, Brooke, was the only person I had ever met with Turner syndrome (TS). Our girls spent every minute they could with one another. They all loved playing school and they all wanted to be the teacher.

I have always had a passion for helping others ever since I can remember. My mom always said that I had a true gift, and it was so natural for me to lend a hand when I could and make a friend to anyone I met. It warms my heart to be able to “fix” something for someone, or just be there to listen. I love hearing the stories, the struggles, and the triumphs that are shared with me.

In 2008, I attended my first TSSUS National Turner Syndrome Conference and was able to meet so many people with TS, their families, and their friends. I was overwhelmed at first, but soon knew that I belonged to this amazing community. Everyone was so very welcoming and by the end of the conference, it felt like I had attended a family reunion. I have had the pleasure to meet or speak with so many of you in the TS community. We have shared fears, tears, and so much laughter!

I have learned so much over the years and I continue to be inspired by so many of you. Whether it be your struggles, your challenges, your strengths or motivations. What an amazing community to be a part of! I am blessed to have made lifelong friendships during my journey and look forward to making many more.
