Susan Jennings and her husband Lee dreamed of having two children,
but knew they couldn’t conceive. A few years after moving to New Jersey
in 1992, the couple contacted an adoption agency and got on a waiting
list for a baby.
They were still waiting nine months later when a friend called Susan
with news: "There’s a baby down in New Orleans with Turner syndrome."
Women with Turner Syndrome often adopt because of the fertility
issues associated with the condition. But in adopting a girl who also
has the condition, the Jenningses made a rare choice, said Cindy
Dunnam, executive director of the Houston-based Turner Syndrome Society
of the U.S. "It’s really unusual," Dunnam said, noting she is aware of
fewer than five such adoptions.
